DON’T DROP IT!

litter-bug.jpgWhy is it that people still drop so much litter today, even when we all know that we should keep our environment litter free and tidy? So much litter is dropped on and off the kirk hallam site every day, so what can we do to stop it?

People (students and adults) need to be aware of the impact litter can have on the lake and the meadows surrounding the school, and the danger it can cause to wildlife.

I invite students to think of ideas for a new poster campaign that can be used around school to encourage students to use the bins. However, the challenge is for the poster to really get through to the conscience of the most hardened students, the ones who don’t want to be told what to do, no matter how much damage it is causing to the environment. How can we make those students care?

Most of us always take our litter with us, or put it in the bins, but where are we going wrong with the other minority of students?

  1. I recently joined the Friends of Kirk Hallam Lakeside and Meadows on a litter pick on saturday 16th February at Kirk Hallam Lake. We spent a couple of hours picking litter around the area of the lake and along the path that runs parallel with the school playing fields. It was a beautiful morning, and there was a good turn out. The local press took some photographs, and the whole experience was surprisingly very satisfying. It made me really appreciate the lovely surroundings we have here at the school, and that we need to work hard to keep them looking that way. The litter mainly consisted of crisp packets, drinks bottles and cans, all of which can pose a real danger to wildlife. I hope that more students from KHCTC will get involved on the next litter pick. Everyone is provided with gloves and a special litter picker so that the whole process is carried out safely.

  2. you may well have noticed that we have had some new bins installed around the playground. this time they have been fixed to the walls, so hopefully this will stop the problem of them blowing over. One of the main comments during our survey regarding litter, was the need for better bins. Lets hope you use them! thanks for your continued support to stop litter dropping!
